Transplant Type - Double Lung

In 1998, after suffering from a lung infection, she was diagnosed with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder that has caused severe damage to her lungs. Sadly, this condition also afflicts her brother. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is essential to her survival. Before she can be added to the transplant waiting list, she must begin fundraising to prove she can afford the necessary medical care and medications.

During this difficult time, Andrea is extremely grateful for the love and support of her family. In 2008, her son moved back home to help care for her and things around the house. Her sister-in-law is her rock, and she doesn’t know what she’d do without her; she goes shopping for Andrea and will serve as her caregiver after receiving a transplant.

Although some days are difficult, Andrea is determined to overcome this battle. She looks forward to regaining a sense of normalcy and doing things on her own, even the seemingly small tasks like grocery shopping and walking her dogs. After recovering from her transplant, she hopes to travel again and see friends she hasn’t seen in years. More than anything, she wants to use her experience to help others who are facing similar struggles.

The average double-lung transplant costs nearly $800,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even though her insurance will cover the cost of the transplant itself, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the transplant. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and expensive daily anti-rejection medications.

When Andrea receives her transplant, she must temporarily relocate more than 350 miles from her home for at least four months to be near the hospital during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging. In 2003, she had to leave her job in accounting and operations—a job she loved—because of her declining health, adding to the financial strain.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Andrea. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Georgia Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write "in honor of Andrea Hughes Maechtle" on the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
