Transplant Type - Double-lung

In the mid-90s, Nereida took numerous trips to the ER because of bronchitis, pneumonia and abdominal pain. Eventually a nurse encouraged a doctor to do additional testing, and she was diagnosed with systemic scleroderma, an autoimmune disorder causing her immune system to attack her lungs, which worsened until she developed pulmonary fibrosis. Over the past several months, Nereida's condition has progressively deteriorated, and she has been in and out of the hospital since July. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is her only hope for survival. Because her illness has also damaged her esophagus, Nereida will require a feeding tube for several months post-transplant.

For Nereida, the most difficult part of her health battle is not having the energy to spend as much time with her husband, Richard, three children and two grandsons. She hates that she can no longer go salsa dancing--a passion of hers--or attend all the family functions. Despite these challenges, she is hopeful and has the desire to keep living every day to the fullest. Nereida relies on her strong faith and her loving family and friends to keep a positive attitude because she knows she can overcome this disease. After receiving her transplant, she hopes to help others facing similar situations. But right now, Nereida needs your help.

A double-lung transplant costs approximately $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. Post-transplant medications can be very costly, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

When Nereida receives her transplant, she must temporarily relocate approximately 400 miles to be near her transplant center for at least two months during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging. As her primary caregiver, Richard will have to take some unpaid time off work to stay with Nereida post-transplant, adding to the financial strain.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Nereida. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT New Jersey Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write "in honor of Nereida Smith" on the memo line.

Thank you for your generosity!
