Transplant Type - Kidney

In 1995, a month after giving birth to her daughter, she began feeling ill. It wasn’t until the following year that doctors were finally able to diagnose her with focal segmental glomerulonephritis, which severely damaged her kidneys. In 2000, she received a kidney transplant, but the new kidney began to reject just six years later because she was unable to afford the necessary post-transplant medications. In 2009, she began undergoing regular dialysis treatments, which take a toll on her quality of life. Doctors say a second kidney transplant is essential to her survival.

Despite these challenges, Crystal is a fighter and refuses to give up. She and her husband, Johnnie, have three children, who mean the world to them both. Crystal wishes she had more energy to be more active in her children’s lives, but she is thankful for the love and support she receives from them and her family and friends. Before she became ill, she loved bowling, fishing, working out and cooking, but these days her declining health prevents her from enjoying most of these activities. Crystal has always been a hard worker, and she even owned her own hair salon and loved her job as a hairstylist; sadly she is no longer able to work because of her health issues.

Crystal looks forward to the lifesaving transplant that will allow her to get back on her feet and resume her normal, active lifestyle. More than anything, she wants to spend many more years creating memories with Johnnie and their family. But she needs your help.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Crystal faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very pricey, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

When she receives her transplant, she must relocate 100 miles from her home to be near the transplant center for at least six weeks during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
