Transplant Type - Heart
In 1984, he had cancer, and underwent chemotherapy treatments, which severely damaged his heart. In 1995, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, and doctors say a heart transplant is essential to his survival. To act as a mechanical heart while he awaits his transplant, doctors implanted a left ventricular assist device (LVAD); this device literally keeps his heart pumping and serves as a bridge to transplantation. Sadly, his kidneys are now functioning at such a low level that doctors believe a kidney transplant is also necessary.
He and his wife, Glennda, have two adult children, and it’s been difficult on the family to see David battle this frightening health crisis, both emotionally and financially. David is a family man who loves his country and being outdoors. He looks forward to receiving a transplant so he can not only enjoy activities like hunting, fishing and being more involved in church, but also the little things that we so often take for granted—such as taking a shower.
The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million, and a kidney transplant is approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to his survival as the transplant.
When he receives his transplant, David must travel 120 miles from his home to the transplant center, incurring substantial travel expenses. Because of his declining health, he is currently on sick leave from Ideal Innovations (I3), adding to his financial strain.
