|Transplant Type - Heart|
We're thrilled to report that Barbara received her transplant on July 11, 2013!
She suffered from congestive heart failure, and she has had five defibrillators implanted since 1996. Doctors said a heart transplant was essential to her survival.
It’s been difficult for Barbara to battle these health issues, especially because she’s been unable to spend as much quality time with her grandchildren as she would like. Now that she has received her transplant, she looks forward to having more energy, traveling to visit relatives and spending more time playing with her grandkids. She also wants to visit her 89-year-old father and his friends in a nursing home once again, as she often felt too exhausted to make those visits before receiving her transplant. She’s also anxious to drive herself wherever she needs to go and live without following such strict dietary guidelines. More than anything, she wants to spend many more years creating memories with her loved ones. But right now, she needs your help.
The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to her survival as the transplant itself.
When she received her transplant, she temporarily relocated 130 miles from her home to be near the hospital during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging. Because of her declining health, she had to stop working in 2005, adding to the financial strain.
You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Barbara. If you'd prefer to send your gift by mail, please send it to the NFT Texas Transplant Fund, 5350 Poplar Avenue, Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please be sure to write "in honor of Barbara Kellner" on the memo line.
Thank you for your generosity!
